Today I'm proud to announce that Sort Invoices and Billy are now part of Backbone. Backbone is an all-in-one back-office solution that helps you grow your company. You get the power of Billy (invoicing) and Sort Invoices (bookkeeping preparation) in a single app that integrates into your existing workflows. Backbone strongly focuses on agentic and AI use, letting you access all features via MCP and connectors in ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini.

I built Backbone out of frustration with existing back-office tools. Too slow, too complicated, too overloaded, not ready for modern challenges, and very expensive. Backbone feels light while bringing all the features you'd want in a back-office tool. I made sure it's ready for modern challenges and integrates into existing workflows like a charm. The coolest thing? You can help shape its future. We added a feature request flow so you can ask for new features you'd like to see in Backbone!

How can Backbone help my business?

Here is an overview of the back-office tasks Backbone can support.

  • Time tracking

    Track time with a timer in the background or log it by hand. Compare your hours with each client's target and add them to your invoices.

  • Invoices & quotes

    Write invoices and quotes right on the page and send them by email as a compliant PDF. Backbone checks the mandatory details and shows you who has paid.

  • Dunning

    Payment reminders and notices go out on your schedule, in your wording. They stop as soon as the invoice is marked as paid.

  • Clients & projects

    One page per client with hourly rate, payment terms, projects, monthly budget and the hours of your whole team.

  • Receipts & matching

    Upload receipts as PDF or photo. Backbone reads vendor, date, amount and VAT and matches every receipt to the bank or card payment behind it.

  • Bank statements

    Upload your bank statements as PDF or CSV and see at a glance which months are covered and which are missing.

  • Export for your bookkeeper

    Receipts, sent invoices and bank statements in one named ZIP, sorted the way your bookkeeper wants them.

  • Reports

    Hours, revenue, profitability and utilisation from the timesheets and invoices you already keep. Group them by client, project or person and download a CSV.

  • Backbone AI

    Ask Billy in plain English or German to log hours, draft invoices, find missing receipts or see who hasn't paid. He works on your real data and asks before anything is sent.

  • AI Connector & MCP

    Use Backbone from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or any other MCP client. Log time, draft invoices and ask who still owes you, and nothing is sent without your OK.

To honor the legacy of Billy, we decided to integrate the name in the form of our friendly AI assistant: Billy. Need help with a task or want to get things done via text prompts? Just ask Billy; he can help you with anything the app can do.

  • Support: Billy knows Backbone in and out and can answer your questions or help you find what you're looking for.
  • Do it for you: If you are not in the mood for a manual task within the app, ask Billy. Billy has access to all tools and can help you.
  • Special cases: Need to find that invoice with that thing you did for that client you can't remember? Billy will find it; ask!
